This seminar will be of interest to city planners, policy makers, architects, developers, builders and other professionals. It will explore the ‘Why?’ and the ‘How?’ of the changes needed in our current policies and practices to meet our obligations to reduce our carbon footprint and energy consumption.

“Rethinking the City” - Daniel Lerch

Rising fuel prices and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will have a profound impact on how we plan, build and maintain our cities, towns and homes. Transport, land-use, housing and construction are just some aspects that will require a creative rethink as we enter this new era of climate and energy uncertainty.
Daniel Lerch is the author of Post Carbon Cities: Planning for Energy and Climate Uncertainty.

“Practical applications of renewable energy” – [tbc]

Situated in Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny, this local authority housing project of 23 Semi-D and terraced houses employs biomass heating and solar thermal and is a house of tomorrow project.

“Part L building regulations” – Colm Byrne

Construction and use of buildings accounts for 45% of all CO2 emissions in Ireland, with residential buildings contributing 30% to this figure. This year new legislation will require all developments to be rated in terms of their energy efficiency.
Colm Byrne is a certified building energy rater and director of Glas.

“Passive house design” – [tbc]

Principals of passive solar design and how they can be applied to new commercial and domestic buildings, and retrofitted to old to reduce overall energy consumption.

“Sustainable community developments” – Davie Philip

The Village, in Cloughjordan, is a development with a difference. The project's buildings, infra-structure services and landscape are conceived and designed according to the provisions of an eco-charter. D
